Children aged from five to 14, from seven Isle schools, will have the chance to develop new interests and acquire new skills under the scheme that is part of a national initiative to raise the aspirations of young people.

A £5,600 grant from the SSE Keadby Wind Farm Community Fund has helped to make the project possible.

Children are awarded credits for taking part in activities including after-school clubs, sports clubs and museum visits. The credits are logged in a ‘passport’ and children aim to gather enough credits in order to ‘graduate’. The Community Fund cash helped to purchase ‘passports’ and staff training.

Sonia Czabaniuk, who applied for funding on behalf of all schools taking part said: “We hope that the children taking part enjoy the experience. We are delighted that this UK-wide project has come to North Axholme and that around 500 children from the area will benefit.

“The Children’s University model mimics the pathways found in higher education and the project will raise aspirations and broaden the horizons of North Axholme children by rewarding them for participation in after-school activities and encourage them to take responsibility for their own out-of-school learning.”

Baroness Coun Liz Redfern, Chancellor of the Children’s University in North Lincolnshire said: “I was delighted to launch the Children’s University at North Lindsey College. It is a wonderful initiative that will provide great opportunities for young people across North Lincolnshire. The SSE funding will give children and young people in the Isle the chance to improve their skills. Young people are the future of North Lincolnshire so it is vital we provide valuable opportunities for them.”
