Chesterfield's town centre Burton store to shut in days

The prominent Burlington Street shop will shut on Saturday after moving to Tesco Extra on Lockoford Lane in the town.

Burton was founded by Montague Burton in Chesterfield in 1904 under the name of The Cross-Tailoring Company.

A Burton spokesman said: "We are constantly reviewing our store portfolio and leases continually expire or come up for renewal.

"We are always looking at how to shape our store portfolio and increasing our presence online - our click and collect service is proving a successful way of helping our customers collect their purchases at a location most convenient to them.

"When leases expire that we do not renew, we endeavour to redeploy staff affected to another store within the group as much as we can."

The store was put on the market by Rob Alston Retail last month with a ten-year lease and rent of £65,000-per-year attached to it.

It is not yet known what the future holds for the building.

Burton is one of the UK's largest men's fashion retailers with more than 400 stores in the UK and Ireland.
