Chesterfield soldier Chris Henchcliffe dies in hospital after being assaulted

A man who was assaulted in Chesterfield more than a week ago has died in hospital.

Staff at Chesterfield and North Derbyshire Royal Hospital called police on Sunday, July 3 to tell officers that Christopher Henchcliffe, 26, had been brought to A&E by ambulance.

Investigations revealed that he had been assaulted by three men in Corporation Street, outside the Pomegranate Theatre, sometime between 4am and 4.30am that day.

Benjamin Edwards, 21, of Field View Place, Chesterfield, was subsequently charged with causing grievous bodily harm but in light of Mr Henchcliffe’s death this morning, police will consult with the CPS about the charges brought in this case.

Two 24-year-old men, arrested on suspicion of causing grievous bodily harm, have been released on bail while the inquiry continues. Anyone with information should call police on 101, quoting reference number 16000177569. You can also call Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111.
