Chesterfield man charged with inflicting grievous bodily harm on Chris Henchliffe

A man has been charged with inflicting grievous bodily harm on young soldier dad Chris Henchliffe in Chesterfield.

Benjamin Edwards, 21, of Fieldview Place, Chesterfield, appeared at the town's magistrates' court for a preliminary hearing on Tuesday morning.

Two other 24-year-old men who were arrested on suspicion of causing grievous bodily harm have been released on police bail pending further enquiries.

Staff at Chesterfield Royal Hospital called police on Sunday to tell officers that 26-year-old Mr Henchliffe had been brought to A&E by ambulance.

According to police, he had been attacked by three men outside the Pomegranate Theatre in Corporation Street, Chesterfield, sometime between 4am and 4.30am that day.

Mr Henchliffe, who has serious head injuries, was later transferred to the Royal Hallamshire Hospital in Sheffield.

On Tuesday morning, a Derbyshire police spokesman said: "He's still very poorly."

Mr Henchcliffe is understood to be a member of the infantry of the British Army.
