Chesterfield cost unlucky punter £800,000

An unlucky punter has lost out on £830,000 - after betting on Chesterfield to beat Portsmouth in a match.

The mystery gambler successfully predicted the 14 correct results out of 15 last weekend, with the 15th game - a League Two fixture - played on Monday.

Bookmaker Coral said the punter placed the bets in the Football Jackpot coupon game.

For a £1 stake people bet on a home win, draw or away win on 15 fixtures.

League Two leaders Chesterfield were 4-7 favourites to beat struggling Portsmouth but the home side was held to a 0-0 draw - leaving Coral bosses breathing a huge sigh of relief.

Speaking before the game, former Sheffield United boss Neil Warnock joked: “Would it be illegal for him to ring Chesterfield up and say, ‘look I’ll give you £100,000 if you win?’.
