Chesterfield bomb scare: latest developments as man is arrested

A man has been arrested at and a scene at a block of flats in Newbold, Chesterfield has been made safe after a device was found in an outhouse nearby in the early hours of this morning.

Flats were evacuated and the bomb squad called after police found a suspicious device in Chesterfield in the early hours of this morning (Thursday, February 20).

Police were called to a block of flats off Devonshire Close at around 2am this morning over concerns for the safety of a man.

Derbyshire Police have confirmed that a 25-year-old man was arrested and a device was found in an outhouse at the rear of the flats.

Emergency services and the Ministry of Defence attended and the device and surrounding area has now been made safe

A spokesman for Nottinghamshire Police said: “The block of flats has been evacuated for the safety of residents and will remain so whilst enquiries continue, with officers remaining in the area.

Reporter Michael Broomhead was at the scene this morning and spoke to residents.

One man who lives close to the scene said: “You don’t expect to wake up and see the bomb squad near your doorstep. It’s quite a shock. I don’t know all the circumstances but it looks like the situation is under control.”
