Richard Burrell, 44, of Taylor Crescent in Chesterfield was ordered to pay a total of £535 in a case at Northern Derbyshire Magistrates’ Court after he pleaded guilty to dishonestly failing to declare his income relating to housing benefit.

The court heard how Burrell had claimed a total of £6376.18 over a two year period after he failed to declare his full income.

Magistrates fined Burrell for this dishonesty on Wednesday, February 17, but gave him credit for showing remorse and for paying back the full amount.

Councillor Ken Huckle, Chesterfield Borough Council’s cabinet member for business transformation, said: “Anyone who claims housing or Council Tax benefit must make sure they tell us their full income.

“Failing to do this could leave them in serious trouble and facing court action. If their circumstances change such as changing jobs, earning more, moving in with a partner or having a baby should report it to us straight away.”
