The Queen of Hearts and a Mad Hatter will help turn a Derbyshire stately home into an Alice In Wonderland-themed attraction.

Chatsworth has chosen the classic Lewis Carroll adventure as the basis for its Christmas theme this year.

The house, gardens and farmyard will give visitors the chance to take a ‘magical journey’ through the weird and wonderful world of Alice.

It will run from Saturday, November 8, to Sunday, January 4, 2014, although the home is closed on Christmas Eve, Christmas Day, Boxing Day and New Year’s Day.

The lower floors of the house will be transformed to recreate classic scenes from Alice’s Adventures In Wonderland, from the fall down a rabbit hole to meeting characters and creatures such as the Cheshire Cat and the White Rabbit.

On arrival, the north entrance hall will be create the illusion of tumbling down the rabbit hole, where visitors will encounter the Mad Hatter’s tea party, the game of croquet and the table with the famous ‘eat me’ cake and ‘drink me’ bottle.

A Chatsworth spokesman said: “Playing Card Soldiers, White Rabbits, and Tweedledum and Tweedledee costumed guides will be on hand to direct visitors through to a majestic woodland scene.

“There, a giant Caterpillar will be smoking his pipe on top of an oversized mushroom as sitar music plays.

“Classic lines from the book are on show en route while sounds include the White Rabbit muttering ‘I’m late, I’m late’ or Alice crying ‘Curiouser and Curiouser’ will be played.”

Youngsters and families alike will also have the chance to dress up in Alice In Wonderland-themed costumes made by the Chatsworth Textiles Team.

The painted hall will form the backdrop for the Mad Hatter’s tea party, with the dining table adorned with dozens of tea cups, saucers, cake stands and even an over-sized steaming teapot.

The displays will also feature traditional Christmas elements, with several fir trees, Christmas garlands and baubles with fairy lights around the house.
