CHARLIE WEBSTER: Tweeting fans want Le Fondre at Lane

Have your say

The Blades’ first friendly against Sheffield FC - a club that all Sheffielders should be proud of, no matter whether red or blue - ended in a draw.

It seems we had plenty of possession but were toothless up front and Jordan Slew looked uninterested. That’s nothing new to Sheffield United, (not Slew looking uninterested, but being toothless up front). It’s been said by many a famous manager, that a team has to be able to defend to attack.

But we need a couple of nippy, agile, hungry lads spearheading our attack. I just hope Slew is dedicated to his club rather than thinking he’d rather be at a Premier League side.

Danny Wilson’s statement before the Blades win in our second friendly of the season against Worksop Town was that he wants to bring more firepower in. That instils me with a bit of faith, if he follows through, for the coming season.

There is no way we can be pushing for top spot and automatic promotion without a striker banging in goals.

Cardiff City’s Jon Parkin is the name being mentioned, 96 goals throughout his career. He’s from South Yorkshire so that’s always a bonus and I think ‘The Beast’ may be a good shout at our level. Terry Skiverton, the Yeovil manager, put a call out on twitter to all fans recently to get them to tweet their suggestions of who he should trial at his club. It’s a great idea to include the insight from fans and it worked - he signed Kieran Agard, who was recommended by a supporter.

So I did my own version of Skiverton’s scouting.

My twitter poll came back with Adam Le Fondre as the majority shout and I couldn’t agree more. He’s a great talent with 23 League Two goals last season. Next up was Ryan Lowe; again, I couldn’t agree more - 27 League Two goals but we’d better hurry.Stockport are hoton his heels.

Of course James Beattie’s name was in there, I’m not so keen as he’s not that active on the pitch. However, Blades on twitter are right - he may not do much but he will hit the target on 20+ occasions.

My poll also had a call for wingers.

One tweeter said if we have players who will provide chances then the goals will come.

Michael Vaughan tweeted: ‘Who you want and who will want to sign for the Blades is a different story!’ Thanks for that wonderful piece of insight, Mr Vaughan. Us Blades are very appreciative.
