Charity wins thanks to South Yorkshire pupils

The children at Summer Lane Primary School choose a new charity to support each year.

The kind-hearted youngsters always select one which is poignant and close to their hearts through the suffering of a pupil, parent or staff member. 

Business manager at Summer Lane Primary School Ann Youell said this year the school were approached by one of their mums who is currently receiving treatment for a brain tumour.

The school felt strongly that they would like to support Brain Tumour Research and Support across Yorkshire (BTRS).

Ann Youell said: “We appreciate that brain tumour research and support is not often in the limelight, although we know that many families are affected by a brain tumour.”

She added: “In fact, when we advised our families of our choice of charity for this year, it was astounding how many other staff and families said that they had a close family member or friend who had also been affected.”

The school council decided on the theme for the day – that was to wear blue and to sell brightly-decorated blue buns and cakes.  The bun stall was very busy all playtime, and staff said that they could have sold three times as many cakes.

The proceeds raised so far are £192, but they expect to top the £200 mark by the time the last few pounds and pennies have been counted.

At Christmas, the staff put money into a pot in lieu of Christmas cards and this raised £108, and with another event planned in the summer term, Summer Lane Primary hope to reach or exceed their target of £400.
