It’s a case of Barcelona or bust for Sheffield couple Paul and Judy Howard, as they prepare to set off on a Spring Bank Holiday adventure.
The motoring enthusiasts are hoping to raise £1,000 for St Luke’s Hospice as they take on the Barcelona Bangers challenge - which sees motorists invest £400 in an old car and head off on a roadtrip through France and Spain to the historic port of Barcelona.
Paul, community liaison manager at Parkwood Springs Academy in Sheffield, explained: “The car must be at least 15 years old, literally a ‘banger’ of a car.” He and Judy, a retired nurse, have chosen a 1995 VW Golf Convertible for their trip and the vehicle will be branded in the colours of the Sheffield hospice.
“I think it would be safe to say the car has had an interesting life,” said 64-year-old Paul. “It’s spent some time on a farm, so when we got it the underneath was covered in mud and it hasn’t been treated with tender loving care.
“It’s got dents all over it but the St Luke’s branding should cover those up and the important thing is that mechanically it is okay.”
The couple, who have received sponsorship from Carillion, Henderson’s Relish, Premier Stores and Fletcher’s bakery for their mad journey, are also decorating the car in a distinctive Australian theme just to make it even more eye-catching as they set about raising the cash for St Luke’s.
Paul added: “We support St Luke’s because it’s a great local charity and it is always going to need so much support from the public.
“We set ourselves the £1,000 target, but if we could make it up to £2,000 that would be brilliant.”
