Sheffield-born John Heyes and friend Sam Davis have challenged themselves to cycle an amazing 340 miles in only four days this weekend to raise money for Great Ormond Street Children’s hospital in memory of John’s nephew Elliott Walker who died there last year.
John and Sam start their bike ride in South Shields, home to Elliott’s Grandparents Keith and Pat Walker. They’re then travelling southbound towards York and then Sheffield to break their journey with Elliott’s family in the city.
Elliott seemed a healthy baby when he was born but after two days at home he stopped breathing.
He was taken to his local hospital and then transferred to Great Ormond Street where he passed away aged 10 days old.
John said: “Although Elliott’s life was so tragically short he inspired me and my family to fund raise in his memory.
“The day after he died my sister and her husband set up a fund in his name to raise much needed cash for Great Ormond Street.”
In just over a year Elliott’s family have raised over £42,000 for GOSH. To read more or to support their effort please visit www.justgiving.com/southshieldsgosh
