Charities across South Yorkshire are being encouraged to bid for a share of £150,000 as part of Yorkshire Building Society’s 150th anniversary celebrations.

The society has pledged to donate £10,000 to 15 charities to fund specific projects that will have a lasting impact on their communities.

Initially 30 charities will be chosen from all the applications received by the society’s Legacy Committee.

Customers and members of the public will then be able to vote online to choose the winning 15 projects.

To mark the anniversary, a penny farthing will travel past some of the country’s most historic landmarks – including Sheffield Cathedral.

Yorkshire Building Society’s chief executive Chris Pilling, who launched the initiative, said: “We are proud to commemorate our milestone anniversary by helping charities to make a positive difference in their communities.

“We welcome applications from charities that want to have an impact in their community and which can provide a tangible benefit to the people within their local area.”

n Charities should apply online at to The Lasting Legacy Fund before September 5.
