The event, on August 21, will take place at the Vulcan Experience at Doncaster Sheffield Airport.

Families are invited to visit XH558, which was the last flying Avro Vulcan, and see her giant delta wings, peer up the crew ladder into the cockpit and stand under the open bomb bay doors.

The day-long event runs from 10.30am until 4pm, and visitors will be able to look at the wide range of Vulcan artefacts on display, many of which have been sourced from the crew’s private collections.

Ian Straw, director of operations, Vulcan Experience, said: “We are really looking forward to welcoming families to this special summer event.

“It is not every day that you get to see such a significant part of our history up close. XH558 is based in the modernised World War II hangar from which she operated during much of the Cold War, and she is one of the most iconic examples of British technology.

“XH558 is owned by a charity that depends on public support to maintain her and to build a brighter future for a new generation of engineers.

“This will be a great day out for families who want to do something different and experience something truly spectacular.”

As an added bonus, families will now also be able to see one of Britain’s most important jet-age aircraft, the English Electric Canberra WK163, which held the world altitude record after reaching 70,310ft in 1957. Canberra WK163 is now based in the Vulcan Hangar where plans are underway to restore her.

Tickets for the Family Day cost £5 for adults and children go free, these can be pre booked online at www.vulcantotheskytrust.checkfront.co.uk/calendar/inventory/ or purchased on the day at the Hangar.
