Chance for cadets to learn from firefighters

Have your say

Budding young Barnsley firefighters can learn more about working for the service and sign up for a free cadet scheme.

South Yorkshire fire service is looking to sign up cadets for a new branch at Cudworth fire station, Tumbling Lane, Barnsley, to start in October.

Cadets train at fire stations once a week to learn firefighting skills and techniques from specially qualified instructors.

They will also enrol on ‘Routes 4 U’, an education programme which fire chiefs say helps to build employability skills for those wanting to work within the health and emergency services .

A recognised qualification is given to recruits at the end of the course.

Fire cadets also play a key role helping at community events, and attend team-building days throughout the year.

Watch manager Keith Watts said: “We’re looking for enthusiastic and motivated young people who are eager to work with our fire cadet instructors to learn new skills and support the fire service’s work in the local community.

“This is a fantastic opportunity to gain first-hand experience of fire station life and to work closely with local fire fighters.”
