Sheffield United will have to compete with Championship rivals Aston Villa to sign Liverpool's Ben Woodburn on loan after Wigan dropped out of the race for the 18-year-old.

Woodburn has not travelled with the Reds on their training camp in France, as a loan deal is expected to be finalised in the next few days.

Chris Wilder's hunt for a striker might have taken another blow, as rumoured target David Nugent has told Derbyshire Live that he is happy and wants to stay with Derby County for the season.

Meanwhile, Sheffield Wednesday goalkeeper Keiren Westwood has been linked to Stoke City after reports last week suggested he was wanted by a number of clubs including Southampton and Liverpool.

Westwood was not on the team sheet for Wednesday's home friendly against Spanish top-flight side Villareal, further fuelling speculation about his future.

Owls boss Jos Luhukay has also declined to confirm or deny if the club is under a transfer embargo as the EFL investigate the club's financial affairs.
