I read with interest Keith Crawshaw's letter regarding The Central Library.

I find it unbelievable that Sheffield is prepared to give up such an icon of a building in order for it to become a hotel.

It is always about money but, as Keith says, Sheffield City Council knew in 2005 that this building was in need of significant investment.

Did the council think that the problem would go away? How naive!

If we are not careful Sheffield will become a cultural desert, having already withdrawn their services from various libraries across the city.

If this much-loved building were to become a five- star hotel I would like the assurance that the investors would provide us with a new library, not in the ‘foreseeable future’ but asap.
