30 members of Barnsley Road Club, which launched in 1924 to promote cycling in the region, left from Northern College for a celebratory ride recently.

The group headed to one of their favourite locations, The Bank View Café at Langsett, which became famous for it’s polka dot exterior after becoming one of the land marks on the route of the 2014 Tour De France Grand Depart.

The group was followed on their ride by a photographer from a national cycling magazine, which will feature the group later this year.

A spokesman for the club said: “We took in spectacular views, as always, in every direction before stopping enjoy birthday cake at The Bank View cafe, which was presented by club president George Miles.

“It’s an exciting year ahead for our club, with a number of races and events on our calendar. In August, we are hugely proud to be promoting the Barnsley Boundary Heroes Ride, which will raise money for Help For Heroes in memory of Private Matthew Adam Thornton. This 80 mile difficult sportive will cover the entire Barnsley Metropolitan boundary, taking in some breath taking countryside.

“The club holds rides every Sunday for all abilities. From April to October, the club will host a ‘welcome ride’ every month to give new cyclists the chance to learn what it’s like to ride in a group and find new routes in the countryside. Come challenge yourself!”
