Celebrating city's young people

Hundreds of pupils from schools across Sheffield have attended a ceremony to celebrate their achievements.

Young people from the city’s charity and youth groups attended Sheffield Town Hall this month, for the Duke of Edinburgh’s Award Presentation Evening.

Deputy Lord Mayor, Coun Anne Murphy, presented the certificates to 369 pupils who took home bronze, silver and gold awards.

Coun Murphy said: “I’m very proud of all those taking part. These awards build on our, learning, skills and expertise, so congratulations to all.”

Duke of Edinburgh’s award manager, Alan Pashley, said: “In the past seven decades, the charity has inspired millions of young people from all walks of life. From volunteering to physical activities, life skills to expeditions, achieving a DofE Award is a passport to a brighter future, valued by employers and universities.

“As a past pupil of Sheffield and award holder myself I’m immensely proud to be the Duke of Edinburgh’s award manager. I’m privileged in my role that I get an insight into what has been involved with young people’s journeys through the award and some of the challenges you have had to overcome.

“I hope that all the young people recognised go on to reflect and re-live their experiences many times in their futures and that what they have learned will prove useful to them. I want to thank them all for being so inspirational.”

Barbara Horsman was presented with an Outstanding Service Award. She said: “I do love Duke of Edinburgh’s Award because you can actually see the effects of the award.”
