Steam train enthusiasts have secured a £50,000 grant which will fund a mile-long extension to their South Yorkshire line.

Elsecar Heritage Railway is extending from Elsecar to Cortonwood, where three acres of land is set to be developed into a station, picnic area and children’s play area.

Barnsley East MP Michael Dugher said: “This is great news. Extending the railway gives families, tourists and shoppers access to a great new service. The hard work of volunteers who dedicate their time and effort to running Elsecar Heritage Railway should be commended.”

Chairman of the Elsecar Heritage Railway, Del Tilling, said: “This is a major step forward.”
