Carousel in Sheffield set for lift-off

Britain's tallest carousel ride '“ at more than 200ft '“ is set for lift-off in Sheffield city centre from tomorrow.

The 220ft, 67-metre, Star Flyer has been installed on Fargate this week and will open to thrill-seekers tomorrow.

The ride will be in place until June 5 after being granted temporary planning permission by Sheffield Council.

Thousands of people are expected to ride the Star Flyer while it is based in Sheffield, with the ride opening seven days a week between 10am and 10pm.

Star Flyer was first set up by ride owners Mellor Group in Liverpool in 2010 and has since been an attraction in London and Manchester.

Council bosses hope the ride will help attract more visitors to the city centre.

A report to councillors last month stated: “It is considered that the Star Flyer will attract visitors and increase footfall in the city centre, benefitting established retail and commercial uses by providing an attraction that will allow Sheffield to rival other regional shopping destinations.”

The ride has seats for 24 people, with trips lasting around four minutes.

Riders must be above 1.2m in height and at least six years old and children under 1.4m tall and age 8 must be accompanied by an adult.

Tickets will cost £6 for adults, £4 for children and £5 for concessions.
