Sheffield teenager Caroline Everest disappeared in the early hours of Sunday morning, after a night out in the city centre.
She was last seen by her friends at about 2.30am on Sunday at Corporation nightclub on Milton Street.
Later that day Caroline failed to turn up for work and also missed a family dinner which she normally attends.
On Monday police issued an appeal for information to trace the missing teenager and held a press conference outside Corporation.
In the early hours of Tuesday morning police found the body of a woman in the Porter Brook, just off Summerfield Street near the city centre.
Although the body hasn't been formally identified, police believe it is that of the missing Sheffield Hallam University student.
The Summerfield Street area of Sheffield was cordoned off for much of Tuesday as police examined the scene.
By late Tuesday morning people started to react with shock to the news that a body had been found in the search for Caroline, and her university and Corporation paid tribute to her.
During the course of yesterday hundreds of messages from well wishers were posted on social media and the Star opened a Book of Condolence.
Meanwhile, an online appeal has been started for fans at Sheffield Wednesday's next home match - against Derby County on December 6 - to stand and applaud during the 18th minute.
