Caring Sheffield student defies the odds to land dream degree

A Sheffield student has landed a place on his dream degree '“ despite being a carer for his mum and struggling with dyslexia.

Chris Hulme, a pupil at King Ecgbert School, in Dore, has been accepted at Nottingham University to study to become a vet.

But it has not been an easy ride for the 18-year-old, who struggles to overcome his dyslexia.

And if that wasn’t enough, Chris is also a carer for his mum, who suffers from Chromes Disease and Osteoporosis – and he has three kidneys.

Chris, who got two B grades and one C in A-level biology, chemistry and maths respectively, said he had to be very strict with his time in order to study hard enough for the exams.

He said: “It’s been difficult at times.

“The way I’ve managed is by being really disciplined and sticking to a rota.

“Whenever my mum was poorly I would look after her and then find time for my studies either at night or first thing in the morning.

Chris, who moonlights as a magician, said he was ‘delighted’ to land a place at Nottingham University.

He said: “I’m really excited to start my studies, it would be a dream job for me.”

Headteacher Lesley Bowes said: “I am proud of all of my students.

“But Chris really has defied the odds to achieve excellent success.

“He really is an inspiration to us all.”
