SOUTH Yorkshire politician John Healey was among 27 MPs to present a petition to Parliament against plans for VAT on static caravans.

The ‘caravan tax’ idea was passed in the Finance Bill, which Wentworth and Dearne Labour MP Mr Healey opposed in a House of Commons vote.

Most of the MPs who have signed the petition represent coastal constituencies, but Mr Healey said he decided to support the protest after receiving letters from constituents on the issue.

He predicted the move would lead to fewer people buying static caravans as a permanent base for getaways than at present. He said: “The change would cost thousands of jobs in manufacturing and tourism.”
