Car fire on M18 near Rotherham causes traffic gridlock

A vehicle fire has caused a traffic gridlock on M18 near Rotherham on Wednesday afternoon (March 17).

Highways England said emergency services from South Yorkshire Police’s Operational Support Unit and South Yorkshire Fire and Rescue were deployed to M18 northbound between Junction 1 near Rotherham and Junction 2 near A1M.

The incident resulted in the closures of two lanes as motorists were told to expect delays of up to 30 minutes as they approached the area.

At 4.47pm, Highways England said South Yorkshire Fire and Rescue have dealt with the fire and all closures have now been lifted.

"All lanes open and flowing freely," it said.

South Yorkshire Police has been contacted for more information.
