A candlelit vigil will be held in Sheffield honour of the victims of the Orlando nightclub mass shooting.

A gunman killed 50 people in the early hours of Sunday morning at Pulse, a gay nightclub.

The event has been organised by Sheffield Hallam LGBT+ Liberation Group and will take place in Hallam Square from 7pm this evening.

After entering the crowded club with an assault rifle and pistol, Omar Mateen, 29, opened fire, killing 50 people and wounding at least 53, according to authorities.

Mateen was killed in a gun battle with police.

Organisers said on Facebook: “Following the tragic events that happened in Orlando, the LGBT+ committee are organising a vigil for tomorrow 7pm to stand in solidarity with all those affected and LGBT+ communities around the world.

Everyone is welcome to come.”

More than 150 people have said they will be attending the event on social media.
