CANALS may be among the oldest forms of transport - but now they’re going state-of-the-art.
Chesterfield Canal Trust has won £60,000 from the Big Lottery Fund after being chosen in a public vote through the People’s Millions initiative to buy a new trip boat, which will be used to provide trips on the waterway for disabled people and schoolchildren.
The boat will be based at Kiveton Park and will be fully accessible for the disabled, with an electro-hydraulic system to enable any user to steer the boat from anywhere within it, regardless of disability. The project is supported by Wales High School and Bluebell Wood Children’s Hospice.
Friends of Wombwell Cemetery today find out if they have been successful with a bid through the same scheme for £42,000 to preserve the ruins of a historic chapel and turn it into a memorial garden.
