Sir Terry, who died yesterday at the age of 77 after a short battle with cancer, paid a visit to our town in 1988 to open a major event in that year's social calendar.

The Irish TV and radio star came to Doncaster in September of that year to officially open an electrical show at Doncaster Racecourse - with thousands of visitors packing in to see him.

At that time, he was a staple on television, hosting his popular early-evening chat show and was also presenting the breakfast show on Radio 2 to millions of listeners.

After opening the Miller Brothers Electro Show '88, he met fans and toured the show to chat to stall-holders.

The free show, one of the biggest in the North of England, also attracted a visit from actress Su Pollard, best known for playing scatty chalet maid Peggy in 80s BBC TV sitcom Hi-de-Hi!

The Doncaster-based electrical retailer held the show at the Racecourse throughout the 1980s, showcasing all the latest electrical products and innovations.

The firm went bust in 2009 and its former showroom at Shaw Lane is now a furniture store.
