Campaign lessened cuts, says MP

A SOUTH Yorkshire MP has said the county’s fire service will be forced to make ‘difficult decisions’ as it faces funding cuts of nearly £5 million over the next two years.

John Healey, Labour representative for Wentworth and Dearne, said the figure could have been higher if he hadn’t launched a parliamentary campaign to make fire brigade cuts more equal nationally – but added the sum was ‘nothing to celebrate’.

Following a government decision on local authority funding in December, South Yorkshire Fire and Rescue says it will lose £2.8m in 2013/14, and then £2.1m in 2014/15.

“The Government have responded to our campaign and, although they remain intent on making big cuts to fire services, the axe has been brought down evenly in all areas over the next two years,” said Mr Healey.
