Cammpaign to help Rotherham residents cut down on alcohol

A new campaign urging Rotherham residents to seek help in reducing the amount of alcohol they drink is set to be launched.

The Rethink your Drink Rotherham campaign is being run by Rotherham Alcohol Service to raise awareness of the dangers of drinking too much alcohol and to provide free advice and support to help people reduce their intake.

Service Manager Matt Pollard said: “Alcohol is the third biggest lifestyle risk factor for disease and death in the UK, after smoking and obesity.

“The risk isn’t just for heavy drinkers. Regularly drinking over the Government’s recommended guidelines can triple your risk of mouth and throat cancer and double your risk of heart disease.

“Many of us use alcohol to celebrate or unwind, but most people don’t realise that alcohol is actually a depressant and it could be doing you more harm than good.

“The benefits of cutting back can also include losing weight, feeling less tired and having more cash in your pocket.”

The campaign will be launched at Rotherham’s New York Stadium on Friday, March 10 from 10am-noon.

Visitors will be able to pick up information and chat to staff about the help available.
