Cameron is spinning result

Nick Clegg demanded a referendum on proportional representation as a prerequisite for co-operation in a coalition government with David Cameron, in response to which Mr Cameron offered a poll regarding the choice between AV and the status quo - take it or leave it.

Mr Clegg immediately accepted the offer thus providing the Cameron camp with an ideal opportunity to rubbish AV and leading even those in favour of genuine PR to vote against or abstain, thereby loading the odds in favour of the No camp.

Cameron is now spinning the result as an overwhelming rejection of electoral reform in general and PR in particular and not simply a rejection of AV.
