Trees planted in remembrance of war dead in several locations including Western Road, Crookes, are due for felling as part of Sheffield Council's Streets Ahead programme.

Those fighting the policy have called for alternative solutions to be found, and the council is currently exploring the roots of the Western Road trees.

But to raise awareness of another memorial in Oxford Street and Tay Street, also in Crookes, campaigners hope to organise a parade of soldiers through the city on March 19.

Graham Turnbull said: "One hundred years ago local residents paid to have these trees planted to remember the boys from their neighbourhood who went off to fight for King and country and never came back.

"One hundred years on Sheffield Council wants to fell these trees, which constitute a war memorial."

The march will begin at the railway station at 10am and will end up in Crookes, going through Crookes Valley Road, Oxford Street and Tay Street.

It has the support of The Woodland Trust and campaigners have maps of the area showing where the soldiers came from and giving information about what happened to them.
