Call for new election system in Sheffield

Have your say

A petition calling for Sheffield Council to move to an ‘all out’ election system would save cash and improve community cohesion, a democracy group has said.

Vicky Seddon, of Sheffield for Democracy, spoke at yesterday’s full council meeting of how the current system meant wards had to be of similar size and evidence showed voter turnout could increase under all out systems.

She said: “Under an all out system the council could change the number of councillors to respond to how wards are growing or declining.”

Currently a councillor for each ward is elected every year for three years, followed by a fallow year.
