Call for further 20mph zones

MORE Sheffield streets have been nominated for 20mph limits, by a Green Party council candidate.

Bernard Little, who is standing for the Broomhill seat in May’s election, is calling for Ashberry Road, Birkendale Road and Birkendale View in Upperthorpe to receive the lower limit.

He said: “Ashberry Road is a rat run which very often has children playing games on the road. Boy racers seems to think because it’s a straight road, they can put their foot down. It is only a matter of time before someone is killed.

“Riding on a bike does not feel safe, particularly at the junctions. A local petition to slow traffic to 20mph has been supported by 90 per cent of residents.”

Mr Little added: “Birkendale Road and Birkendale View are very steep and very narrow.

“People shouldn’t be driving like Jeremy Clarkson. The cobbled roads are not up to it. There is a blind corner at Birkendale Road and Birkendale junction.”

Sheffield Council’s seven community assemblies are each being given £40,000 to create 20mph zones over the next year.
