A South Yorkshire MP has called for urgent action on long-term unemployment as the total remained high – despite an overall fall in the UK’s jobless total.
Data from the Office for National Statistics showed the number of Jobseeker’s Allowance claimants dropped by 41,700 in September, a 16-year record.
There are currently 1.35 million people claiming the allowance.
However, Michael Dugher, Labour MP for Barnsley East, said he was concerned long-term youth unemployment in the town remained ‘static’ at 475.
Meanwhile, the number of people out of work more than 12 months only fell by five to 950 in September, from 955 in August.Mr Dugher has called for a compulsory jobs guarantee for anyone out of work for more than two years.
