Buxton date for Ronettes star Ronnie

Iconic rock singer Ronnie Spector, credited as Amy Winehouse's biggest inspiration, is playing Buxton this month, paying tribute to the music of the Ronettes, the ultimate girl group she co-founded in the late 50s.

The tour, which also takes in Glastonbury Festival, will see Ronnie and her American band perform all the hits which captured love and loss in New York’s Spanish Harlem through the 60s. Be My Baby, the song that had a resurgence of popularity after it featured on the Dirty Dancing soundtrack is part of the set list, together with tracks like Baby I Love You, Do I Love You and Walking in the Rain.

Songs originally recorded by the group that became successful for other artists, such as I Can Hear Music (Beach Boys) and Chapel of Love (Dixie Cups) will also feature. Longtime fans will also be thrilled with the performances of such Ronettes cult classics as Paradise, written for Ronnie by the late Harry Nilsson.

The concert follows Ronnie’s last UK appearance in December , when her show played London’s Barbican to critical acclaim, with music journalists noting that her voice still offers a mix of ‘innocence and lasciviousness’ and that there was not a "bum note in the lovingly conceived and executed show".

In April, the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame member released the first new Ronettes recording in 49 years, English Heart.

Ronnie Spector Sings the Fabulous Ronettes is at Buxton Opera House on Tuesday, June 21 at 7.30pm. Box office: call 02198 72190 or visit www.buxtonoperahouse.org.uk
