Busy bank holiday for mountain rescue team

Mountain rescuers were called out to more than five separate incidents over the bank holiday weekend - even rescuing a couple who sent them a selfie.

The couple became stranded on a ledge near Winnats Pass, close to Castleton, at around midday on Sunday and sent a selfie to the Edale Mountain Rescue Team, as their location could be clearly seen in a photograph they had taken together earlier the same day.

They had got stuck after scrambling up the steep bank to the left of the pass.

The couple were uninjured and were helped to safety with a rope.

The rescue team was also called to Stanage Edge near Hathersage after a student from Sheffield University fell five meters from the rock face while climbing.

She was treated for injuries to her head and pelvis.

The student was then flown to the Northern General Hospital in Fir Vale by air ambulance.

A mountain biker had to be given CPR after suffering serious injuries near Bradwell village.

The crew of the Derbyshire, Leicestershire and Rutland air ambulance also joined the rescue,

The man was then carried to an ambulance on a mountain rescue stretcher and transferred to the village green where the air ambulance had been able to land.

The mountain rescue team praised members of the public for their help during the incident.

A spokesman from Edale Mountain Rescue Team said: “The team would like to pass on their thanks to two individuals that assisted with the stretcher carry and a number of local residents that lined the way to guide in the emergency services. This incident really was a collective effort.”
