Businesses flock to Magna event

Dozens of companies have signed up to exhibit at a new business networking event at Magna.

The Inspiring Yorkshire Business Event, which aims to help boost the booming economy across the county, is on February 18.

More than 50 firms are set to exhibit, including CQ Strategic Marketing, Santander, Dearne Valley College, IT Desk and RiDO.

The event will feature speakers, including Charlie Grayson, senior business consultant at Rotherham College, Sheffield management consultant Andy Hanselman and a representative from the Federation of Small Businesses.

Magna chief executive John Silker said: “It’s great to have such a wide variety of businesses attending the event. All of the businesses on site will be available to give advice on several areas, including legal advice, business start-up advice and support, IT support and advice on how to grow your business. The speakers who are turning up are brilliant and I’m sure they’ll contribute to what will be a great event.”

Magna in the former Templeborough steelworks near junction 34 of the M1, has started organising more of its own events, such as Oktoberfest, themed evenings and a wedding fair.

In November, Rotherham councillors said there would be “no new money” for the attraction but agreed to extend the time for repayment of its loans. At the time Magna owed the authority £440,000.

Under a proposal Magna would have up to 15 years to repay the money.

The plan aimed to secure Magna’s immediate future and minimise the risk to public money. At the time, council leader Chris Read said closing the attraction would result in the loss of up to 80 jobs.
