Businesses call for Sheffield City Airport to be reopened

SMALL business representatives have launched a petition calling for Sheffield City Airport to be reopened rather than turned into a business park.

The runway remains in place although plans have been approved to redevelop the land as Blue Skies Business Park.

South Yorkshire Federation of Small Businesses believes the airport, which last had commercial flights in 2002 and closed in 2008, could be successful if relaunched.

Regional chairman Gordon Millward said: “In the past, Sheffield City Airport ran daily shuttle services to European capitals. Since then, commercial aviation has switched to Robin Hood.

“But it is not suitably placed to provide fast turnaround easy-access shuttle flights to serve business requirements. The FSB remains convinced the need for an airport in Sheffield is greater now than ever.”

The federation is calling for an independent public inquiry.

Its petition, which currently has more than 200 signatures, can be signed at
