Business Monthly: Pipeline project completed early

Sheffield-based infrastructure firm Fulcrum has completed a 13km pipeline to link Scotland's main gas network to four distilleries '“ and it is a month ahead of schedule.

The £4m project will deliver a seasonal gas supply to the Scottish Highlands, and has been finished early despite being particularly complex.

Fulcrum engineers had to overcome adverse weather and the technical challenge of running the pipeline across seven bridge crossings. Each bridge raised individual challenges, with the crossing at Dailuaine being the most complex. Engineers used an innovative sleeve solution in the bridge arches to complete the pipeline crossing.

Chief executive Martin Donnachie said: “The early completion of this project is testament to the tenacity and technical expertise of our engineers.

“This is one of the most technically-complex gas infrastructure projects delivered in the UK for some time, which makes it very significant to the expansion of the country’s gas network. It proves our ability to overcome a variety of challenges to support the growth of the network in rural or urban environments.”

The new pipeline means Highlands residents will have access to a gas supply for the first time, and the community was consulted regularly.
