Businesses in Sheffield city centre were without water this morning and part of the afternoon because of a burst main.
Supplies were restored shortly after 1pm – but then later went off again.
Yorkshire Water supplied bottles of water to businesses affected by the problem.
The leak was at the junction of Solly Street and Tenter Street, near West Bar.
It led to the closure of the downhill stretch of the road between Hawley Street and West Bar roundabout.
The road was in the process of being resurfaced when the leak was discovered.
It caused the newly laid surface to ripple.
A Yorkshire Water spokeswoman said: “We would like to apologise for the burst water main this morning at the junction of Solly Street and Tenter Street in Sheffield, and any inconvenience this has caused.
“Our technicians are working hard to ensure water supplies are restored as soon as possible, and the police are on site looking at temporarily closing the road.”
