The highly-anticipated development has been beset by months of delays.

But Richard Tarbatt, director of site owners William Twigg (Matlock) Ltd, today said: "We can confirm that work on the new McDonald’s in Matlock has commenced.

"The plan to develop the site on Bakewell Road was approved for planning permission last year.

"The site, next to Twiggs’ steelworks, will include a drive-thru McDonald's and a hand car-wash.

"An opening date for McDonald’s will be announced shortly."

Planning permission for the development of the former Madison’s site was originally granted by Derbyshire Dales District Council back in August 2014.

Construction work was due to get underway in summer 2015, with the new restaurant opening in early 2016, but the project has suffered repeated delays.

In August 2015, William Twigg Ltd, which will own the facilities and lease to operators, revealed one of the tenants, Majestic Wines, had pulled out of the project, forcing the plans to be amended to incorporate a new car wash. These were eventually rubber-stamped a month later.

"Our new restaurant will provide significant investment for Matlock," said a spokesman for McDonald's previously.

About 80 jobs are expected to be created by the development; 65 at the new McDonald’s and 15 at the car wash.

McDonald's was founded in 1940 as a barbecue restaurant operated by Richard and Maurice McDonald.

Today, McDonald’s is the world’s largest restaurant chain, serving approximately 68 million customers daily in 119 countries across approximately 36,538 outlets.
