A Sheffield eatery which closed its doors without warning has promised to reimburse any customers who paid deposits for bookings.

The Brooklyn Steak Bar and Grill in Ball Street, Kelham Island, has been shut for weeks and its phone line is no longer working.

But a spokesman for the eatery told The Star the venue is due to reopen ‘within days’, and that the closure was due to issues with Sheffield Council which had asked the venue to make changes including to its air purifier.

One of the bar’s major stakeholders, boxing promoter Dennis Hobson, added: “The Brooklyn has good reviews and a good reputation.”

Customer Helen Morgan, aged 25, from Norfolk Park, booked a Christmas party at the venue for December, and paid a £200 deposit. She worried the restaurant would not reopen in time for her booking to be honoured.

She said: “We booked a Christmas party for December 5. Now it seems to be shut for a reason we don’t know.”

Reviewers also took to online review site TripAdvisor to air concerns. One said: “How appalled I am this restaurant closed without letting me know. We had a booking for tomorrow night and it was only by chance someone let me know it is not open.

“I have not been informed by the restaurant. I called the number which is dead.”

The venue’s spokesman, who did not want to be named, said the bar contacted customers who made bookings to let them know.

“We closed due to circumstances with the council, who gave us things to change including an air purifier,” he said. “We closed for two weeks but the closure had to be extended.

“We called 200 to 300 people who made bookings in that time to inform them. It is possible one or two could have been missed. As Ms Morgan’s booking was in December we knew we would be open again by then, so we did not call her. If anyone else has paid for a booking in that time frame – and we don’t think it is the case – we are going to refund them.”
