More than 10,000 people visited a festival at Sheffield University to celebrate the 100th birthday of composer Benjamin Britten.

The celebration A Boy Was Born, in 2013 was the largest in the UK outside of Britten’s home town of Aldeburgh, Suffolk.

More than 50 events took place, featuring 70 of Britten’s most famous compositions.

Some 30 organisations took part, including Museums Sheffield, Music in the Round, the Showroom Cinema, choirs and orchestras.

Stewart Campbell, festival director, said: “It’s been an inspirational year.”
