Britain’s oldest woman and South Yorkshire resident has died aged 114.

Ethel Lang, born in Worsbrough, Barnsley, on May 27 1900, was believed to be the oldest person in the country.

She lived in the South Yorkshire town her whole life and died on Thursday at Water Royd House nursing home, where she had lived since 2005.

Born in Worsbrough Dale in 1900, Ethel married William Lang, son of an alderman and councillor at St Mary’s Church in Worsbrough in 1933 and the couple’s only daughter Margaret was born a year later.

During the war Ethel worked at a small sewing factory called Miss Blackburns.

Ethel and William shared the same birthday but he was four years older and died shortly before his 93rd birthday.
