Bridge work finished two months early

A MULTI-million pound bridge scheme which will play a vital part in the regeneration of Rotherham has been completed – two months ahead of schedule.

The new 3.1 million road bridge, on the B6463 Todwick Road at Dinnington, replaces one which is more than 100 years old.

The replacement structure has been designed to cope with the weight of increased traffic going to and from the nearby former Dinnington Colliery, which has been redeveloped as an industrial site.

Rotherham Council says the new bridge has been specially designed in metal, which needs little maintenance - and has footpaths and a bridleway.

The old bridge was single lane and controlled by lights, which often led to traffic snarl-ups.

Installing the new bridge and getting rid of the old one meant a road closure lasting several months.

Gerald Smith, Rotherham Council’s cabinet member for environment and development services, said: "I am delighted to see this bridge open because it will vastly improve traffic links around the area and be a vital boost.”

The bridge has been jointly funded by Yorkshire Forward and the Department of Transport.
