Bride given away by Toby Tyke to Match of the Day theme

A SOUTH Yorkshire couple have tied the knot – after handing over complete control of their marriage ceremony to the listeners of a local radio station.

Nicola and James Hyde, from Brierley, Barnsley, have been together four years, but since buying a house they couldn’t afford to pay for a wedding.

So when 28-year-old Nicola heard a competition to win the whole thing organised for them, she entered without a second thought.

Listeners to Galaxy radio chose every aspect of the wedding – from the venue and cars to the best man, the first dance, and even the dress.

As a result, Nicola walked down the aisle to the Match of the Day theme tune alongside Toby Tyke, the Barnsley Football Club mascot, who gave her away.

After the ceremony the couple were whisked away with sirens blaring in a replica of the Ford Gran Torino used in Starsky and Hutch.

Their movie-themed reception was held at the National Media Museum in Bradford and, as part of the evening’s entertainment, guests were treated to the world premiere of Nicola and James: The Movie in the museum’s Pictureville Cinema.

Nicola said: “It was a truly special day, which we’ll never, ever forget.”

James, 27, who works in Barnsley Council’s planning department, said: “I was nervous about handing our wedding over, but the listeners made some great choices.”
