Breakthrough in bid for Lakeside watersports

LONG-standing plans to introduce watersports on the man-made lake at Doncaster Lakeside may finally become a reality.

The original vision for the area, when it was designed in the 1980s, was that the lake should be used for work and leisure

But the plans were watered down after it was discovered that the lake contained potentially dangerous blue-green algae. Problems with the water table and drainage were also found.

However, work to monitor the lake aeration and make it suitable for water activities is under way, Doncaster Council cabinet heard in a report from developers 3D.

Plans to introduce more public art at the site are also under way and further housing and business developments are also in the pipeline.

Meanwhile, 3D expects the Doncaster Marina, next to Doncaster College’s Hub campus, to be completed in the next 12 months.

The project includes work to strengthen the canal walls and improve access to the site – the roundabout connected to St George’s Bridge will be altered to slow traffic, ease congestion and allow pedestrians to walk to the arena from the markets.

The marina, which is already under construction, will provide moorings for 90 boats.

A spokesman for developers 3D said: “The design and development has been supported by a number of market analysis studies and more detailed spatial strategy.”
