United confirmed earlier this afternoon that the 20-year-old, who played two first team games for the Blades and most recently enjoyed a loan spell with Barrow in the National League, had been released early from his contract, which was due to expire in June.

Khan impressed in a trial arranged by Barnsley staff, and boss Lee Johnson was quick to offer him a deal which will keep him in South Yorkshire until June 2017.

"Otis did really well in his trial arranged by our recruitment team and we're pleased he's joined us," Johnson said.

"He excelled at Conference level recently with Barrow and this is a great opportunity for him to kickstart his career."

Khan, who will wear squad number 19 at Oakwell, added: "I'm really happy to sign. It's a really young squad and I'm happy to have the chance. I'm over the moon to be here.

"I'd say I'm an attacking midfielder who likes to create and score goals. I want to create opportunities for players and myself."

Khan, who was a regular with United's U21s, made senior substitute appearances in victories over Crawley Town and Rotherham United in 2014.
