Online shopping giant Amazon has announced the creation of 270 new jobs at a new delivery office in Sheffield.
The firm, which already employs 300 workers at a depot in Doncaster, with another 300 due to be created at a second depot in the town over the next three years, is setting up its Sheffield ‘delivery station’ base on the Victory Park retail park, near Meadowhall.
Orders picked in Doncaster will be sent to the Sheffield base for local delivery drivers to collect.
Amazon said 20 jobs will be created at the Sheffield base itself, with 12 independent firms set to hire more than 250 delivery drivers to handle parcels from there seven days a week.
The new Amazon delivery station will be the company’s 17th in the UK and will serve customers across South Yorkshire.
Earlier this year, Amazon announced that Sunday deliveries had quadrupled over the last year.
Jamie Stephenson, UK Director for Amazon Logistics, said: “Amazon Logistics adds capacity and flexibility to Amazon’s delivery network, enabling us to meet the delivery needs of customers.
“Amazon Logistics is also helping independent local delivery companies to grow their businesses by providing state of the art technology to deliver Amazon orders.”
